Why It Matters
Every dollar spent at a Black-owned business recirculates in our community.
Since 2020, Black Owned Florida has been a completely free directory — no listing fees, no pay-to-play, no gatekeeping. A salon owner in Miami shouldn’t have to pay to be found. A contractor in Jacksonville shouldn’t need a marketing budget to get discovered.
We built this platform to level that playing field. And we’ve been funding it out of pocket ever since. Now we’re asking our community to help us go further — more cities, more features, more visibility for the businesses that make Florida worth living in.
The Story Behind the Directory
It started with a simple problem: I couldn’t find us.
I was looking for Black professionals — doctors, attorneys, accountants, contractors — and it was harder than it should have been. Not because they didn’t exist. Because there was no central place to find them in Florida.
So I started keeping my own list. Just for myself, at first. Then friends started asking. Then friends of friends. Word spread the way it always does in our community — quietly, reliably, person to person.
“If I’m looking for us and I can’t find us — I need to build something that changes that.”
Eventually the referral requests grew enough that it made more sense to just make it available to everyone. That’s what Black Owned Florida is — a personal list that became a public resource, funded entirely out of my own pocket because I believe our community deserves a home base.
Now I’m asking the community to invest alongside me — so we can grow it into what it was always meant to be.
