What Is Juneteenth? The Day That Changed Everything
On June 19, 1865 β more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation β Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved people were free. That day became known as Juneteenth. For Black Americans, it has always been a day of joy, remembrance, and community. In 2021, President Biden signed legislation making it an official federal holiday. Today, June 19, 2026, marks its 161st anniversary. Tampa Bay offers the most events per metro area, with something happening in nearly every neighborhood on June 19.
Most outdoor events recommend bringing lawn chairs or blankets, sunscreen, water, cash for Black-owned vendors, and comfortable shoes. Many events are family-friendly β bring the kids. If attending an evening outdoor event like the Friendship Fountain celebration in Jacksonville, a blanket and light layer are useful as temperatures can drop slightly after sundown.
Florida has its own emancipation history that actually predates the June 19, 1865 announcement in Texas. Florida Emancipation Day is observed on May 20 β the day in 1865 when Union General Edward McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation in Tallahassee, announcing freedom to enslaved Floridians. Florida is also home to Eatonville β just north of Orlando β which is recognized as the oldest incorporated Black municipality in the United States, founded in 1887. Gainesville honors both dates through its “Journey to Juneteenth” month-long observance.
