On June 19, 1865 — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation — Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved people were free. Florida has its own emancipation history that actually predates the June 19, 1865 announcement in Texas. Florida Emancipation Day is observed on May 20 — the day in 1865 when Union General Edward McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation in Tallahassee, announcing freedom to enslaved Floridians. Florida is also home to Eatonville — just north of Orlando — which is recognized as the oldest incorporated Black municipality in the United States, founded in 1887. Gainesville honors both dates through its “Journey to Juneteenth” month-long observance.
