Who founded Black Owned Florida and why? +
Black Owned Florida was founded in 2020 by a Black entrepreneur based in Central Florida who recognized a gap in the market: there was no dedicated, professional online directory for Black-owned businesses and licensed professionals in the state. The platform was built from the ground up to give Black professionals a trusted digital home and to make it easier for Florida residents to intentionally support their community. Today it serves as a leading resource for Black homebuyers, business owners, and professionals across Florida.
How is Black Owned Florida different from other business directories? +
Unlike general directories such as Yelp or Google Maps, Black Owned Florida is exclusively focused on Black-owned businesses and licensed professionals in Florida. Every listing is reviewed for authenticity. It is Black-owned, community-driven, and built specifically to address the wealth gap by connecting consumers directly with the Black professionals who serve them best.

Real Estate & Mortgage Questions
Why should I use a Black-owned real estate agent in Florida? +
Working with a Black-owned real estate agent means working with a professional who understands your community’s specific needs, history, and goals around homeownership and wealth-building. Black real estate agents are statistically more likely to advocate for buyers in neighborhoods where Black homeownership has historically faced barriers. Beyond representation, choosing a Black-owned agent keeps commission dollars circulating within the Black community — a direct investment in closing the racial wealth gap. Every home purchase is an opportunity to build generational wealth and support the community at the same time.
What first-time homebuyer programs are available in Florida for Black buyers? +
Florida offers several programs that help first-time homebuyers, many of which are particularly beneficial for Black buyers building equity for the first time. The Florida Housing Finance Corporation offers down payment assistance programs including the Florida Assist and Florida HLP Second Mortgage programs. FHA loans require as little as 3.5% down and are available to buyers with credit scores as low as 580. The USDA Rural Development Loan offers zero down payment in eligible areas. VA loans provide no down payment options for eligible veterans. A licensed Black mortgage broker can help you identify which program fits your specific income, credit, and location. Contact Jhenesis Mortgage at jhenesismortgage.com for a free no-obligation consultation.
What credit score do I need to buy a home in Florida? +
The minimum credit score to buy a home in Florida depends on the loan type. FHA loans are available with a credit score of 580 or higher with 3.5% down, or as low as 500 with 10% down. Conventional loans typically require a minimum score of 620. VA loans for eligible veterans have no official minimum score, though most lenders prefer 580 or above. Conventional loans with the best interest rates generally require a 740 or higher. If your credit score is below 580, a licensed mortgage broker can advise you on credit repair strategies to help you qualify. Contact Jhenesis Mortgage for a free credit and pre-qualification review.
How does the home buying process work in Florida? +
The home buying process in Florida typically follows these steps. First, get pre-approved for a mortgage so you know your buying power. Second, work with a licensed Realtor to search for homes that match your needs and budget. Third, make an offer on a home — your agent will negotiate on your behalf. Fourth, once under contract, complete the inspection and appraisal process. Fifth, the lender processes your final loan approval. Sixth, you attend closing, sign documents, and receive your keys. In Florida, the typical closing process takes 30 to 45 days from contract to closing. Working with a Realtor who is also a licensed mortgage broker — such as Stephens Realty and Jhenesis Mortgage — simplifies this process significantly.
What is the difference between a real estate agent and a mortgage broker? +
A real estate agent is a licensed professional who helps buyers and sellers navigate the purchase or sale of property. They represent your interests during negotiations, showings, and the contract process. A mortgage broker is a licensed financial professional who connects borrowers with lenders and helps secure the best loan terms for the buyer’s financial situation. The two roles are complementary — you typically need both to complete a home purchase. Some professionals, like those listed on Black Owned Florida, are licensed in both real estate and mortgage brokerage, which allows them to guide clients through the entire transaction from pre-approval to closing keys.
Community & Mission
Why is it important to support Black-owned businesses in Florida? +
Supporting Black-owned businesses in Florida creates a direct economic impact within the Black community. Research shows that a dollar spent at a Black-owned business is significantly more likely to be reinvested in the local Black community through hiring, purchasing, and community investment. Florida is home to one of the largest Black populations in the United States, yet Black business ownership and Black homeownership rates remain significantly below state averages. When you hire a Black attorney, work with a Black realtor, or use a Black-owned financial service, you are actively participating in the solution to the racial wealth gap. Black Owned Florida exists to make that choice easy and trusted.
How many Black-owned businesses are there in Florida? +
Florida is home to hundreds of thousands of Black-owned businesses, making it one of the states with the highest concentrations of Black entrepreneurship in the United States. Florida cities including Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa have significant and growing Black business communities. Despite this, Black-owned businesses remain underrepresented in professional service categories such as real estate, finance, and legal services. Black Owned Florida is working to change that by providing a dedicated platform where Black professionals are visible, searchable, and accessible to the entire Florida community.
Can non-Black people use this directory? +
Absolutely. Black Owned Florida is open to everyone. Any person looking for a trusted professional in Florida — regardless of their background — is welcome to use the directory. Great professionals are great professionals. Many people who use the directory are simply looking for the best attorney, the most knowledgeable real estate agent, or the most trusted mortgage broker in their area, and they find them here. The directory is a community resource for all of Florida while remaining rooted in the mission of uplifting Black professionals and Black-owned businesses.
